Santee Boulders offers a variety of challenges for climbers of all levels.
Now that spring has sprung, it’s time to make the most of the Southern California sunshine. Outdoor bouldering is a popular activity that works out the entire body. It’s the most popular bouldering area in the San Diego region, and just a short drive from our hotel in Santee.
Bring climbing shoes and a crash pad to be safe, although many of the areas are safe and stable enough to go sans-pad. Early morning is the best time to beat the heat and the crowds. Keep in mind that although this is a very popular destination, it’s still relatively remote. Stick to the existing trails for safety.
A Bould-er Move
The bouldering area is located right across the street from West Hills Park. There’s a parking lot across the road with limited designated crosswalks. You’ll spot the boulders from the north side of the road. Fortunately, April is a relatively slow month for bouldering in San Diego, so you’ll have more of the space to yourself.
Challenges and difficulties range from sub-5.6 to 5.12, and V1 to V12. There are a variety of classic climbing routes at the boulders including The Carousel, Mantle, Fingercrack, Flake, and Sloping Disappointment. Take your workout to the outdoors and experience one of Santee’s most prized fitness destinations.
